Addio al Fumo!
Tuesday January 11, 2005
Italy's ban against smoking in public places, specifically restaurants and bars, finally went into effect at Midnight January 12. And at 12:01 AM the first transgressor -- a Neapolitan -- was ticketed in a bar. For those of us who don't smoke, an estimated 70% of the Italian population, this is a victory, because even though people won't stop smoking immediately (and restaurants can open smoking rooms) it means the law is on our side if we ask a smoker whose smoke is invading our space to extinguish his or her but. My morning cappuccino is going to be much more tasty...
