Yes, it's that sticky in much of Italy, and the only reason we're not having brownouts or blackouts is that ENEL did a major upgrade of the supply grid after the merciless heat of 2003 (then ENEL simply turned off sections of the grid to reduce demand, expecting those in elevators or on life support to cope until they turned them back on).Air conditioning sounds nice, and many use it, but if you leave an air conditioned building it seems that much hotter and muggier. Something cold, on the other hand, brings relief.
Beer is an obvious choice, but it's like cherries, with one bottle inviting another and another and another, and that may not be the best path to take. Something non-alcoholic?
A Peach Cremolata, made with ice and milk as well, is quite nice.
A Strawberry Cremolata, made with fruit and ice (but no milk) is a bit lighter, and thus more refreshing.
Then there's the classic Lemony Italian Ice.
And, if the situation is really desperate, the Romans swore by Acetello, with good reason.
Finally, had enough non-alcoholic chillers and want to liven one up? Try Sgropin!
