Fave e Cicoria

I just got back from a week of wine tasting in Puglia. A beautiful trip, and in addition to the wines there were the foods.

Lots of greens -- Pugliesi say, Quando minti oiu e sale ogne erba se pote mangiare, When you add oil and salt all greens are edible, and are true to their words: At almost every meal the menu included a platter with fava bean puree and some sort of green, usually chicory or broccoli raab.

Here we have chicory, prepared by the Guarini Family, of Duca Carlo Guarini (an excellent estate with superb wines). Perfect winter comfort food.

I’m sure you have also experienced other delicious meals and appreciated each of our regional DOC wines.

Puglia is a region that offers culture, art, landscapes…and obviously fantastic culinary experiences.

Cheers

We ate very well, with a beautiful combination of home cooking and restaurant fare. And you’re right, I did get a feel for some (not all) of the region’s appellations. So far I’ve written about Nero di Troia, here: http://italianwinereview.blogspot.com/2009/12/wandering-puglia-mostly-nero-di-troia.html

You should share some background with your readers before
they get all choked up about the attack on Berlusconi. Does he really deserve their sympathy?

BBC reported the incident with Berlusconi, ending with this statement…
“Mr Berlusconi has been under pressure in recent months.
His private life has been in the spotlight, amid allegations that he slept with prostitutes, and after his wife filed for divorce.
He has dismissed accusations of ties to the Mafia, and criminal cases against him have resumed after a law giving him immunity was overturned.
A week ago tens of thousands of people attended an anti-Berlusconi rally in Rome.”

I am not a fan of Mr. Berlusconi — quite the contrary, as readers who also get my text newsletter (Cosa Bolle in Pentola, http://www.cosabolle.com) know.

However, I think he does deserve our sympathy. He was attacked by a guy who threw a fist-sized souvenir statuette of Milano’s Duomo (complete with spire) at him, striking him full in the face. In addition to scrapes and gouges he has a broken septum, lost 2 teeth, and also lost a pint of blood. He can’t eat and the complications are such that he is still under observation, and will be for a while more. And, truth be told, he’s lucky. Had the spire stuck him in the eye, he would likely have died.

So yes, he does have my sympathy.
