Rain, Rain and More Rain

Follow me on:

The sky was a brilliant, beautiful deep blue yesterday morning, but by mid-day it was white and by 4 PM, when the first drops began coming down, it was gunmetal gray and the lights had come on. Then it got darker and began to pour. Most impressive.

And excellent soup weather, perfect for a bowl of pastina (or passatelli) in brodo, rich home-made broth with pasta blebs or passatelli.

To make a full Italian meal of it, follow the soup with boiled meats (those used to make the broth), served with mayonnaise, mustard, mostarda, and salsa verde (or bagnet ross, if that's your preference), and crusty bread. And either mashed potatoes or recooked spinach (or both). The wine? A dry Lambrusco di Sorbara.

Don't have time to make broth? A very different solution to a rainy night is filetto al pepe verde, beef fillet with green peppercorn sauce. The spice is perfectly warming!
